Hello again in another post about Game of Thrones. Very excited to finally share my insights on the success of the show. I wrote a post about its dark side and things by which viewers could get negatively affected. So, it is only fair to also write a post appreciating the perfect execution of an artistic masterpiece that captured millions of viewers worldwide.

Now just to give some context, I watched it all except the last few episodes (Knew the ending was devastating so I couldn’t handle seeing the tragedy), but I did not read the books. So to all the book readers out there, apologies for any inaccuracies with the books. Alright, let’s start!

What makes a good production, good? How does a show capture the hearts and minds of millions of people and render them very loyal to the fandom over the span of 8 full years?!

Now, I am not by any means an expert in media production, did not study theater academically nor motion picture, yet! That is why what I am sharing are mere personal takes and insights from a very observant empath viewer who loves to dig deep into things and is passionate about visual arts in general.

Let’s dive in:

1-Epic Storyline!

Let’s face it, Game of Thrones’ storyline keeps the viewer on edge! Engaged, curious, thrilled and coming for more. During each episode, we get captivated by the events. A good storyline attracts viewers through various mechanisms that engage the brain and elicit emotional responses. You can read here about the details to each of these points about Epic Storylines here.

Here are some key neuroscientific perspectives on how this occurs:

  1. Emotional Engagement: Storylines that evoke strong emotions—like joy, fear, or anger—activate the brain’s limbic system, fostering a deeper connection between viewers and characters. This emotional resonance encourages investment in characters’ journeys and story arcs, as viewers are more likely to feel personally involved. Additionally, when audiences identify with characters, mirror neurons in the brain engage, allowing viewers to “experience” emotions vicariously, which enhances empathy and reinforces emotional engagement.
  2. Cognitive Engagement: Suspenseful and curiosity-driven storylines stimulate the brain’s reward pathways, releasing dopamine, which reinforces the desire to see how events unfold. Additionally, complex narratives that include twists and layers engage the prefrontal cortex—responsible for problem-solving and decision-making—keeping viewers mentally active and engrossed in piecing together the storyline.
  3. Character Development: When viewers relate to well-developed characters, it activates brain areas involved in self-referential processing, enhancing emotional engagement through identification. Additionally, storylines with moral or ethical dilemmas stimulate critical thinking, as audiences reflect on characters’ choices, promoting deeper cognitive processing and sparking discussions, which enrich the viewing experience.
  4. Narrative Structure: Familiar narrative structures, like the hero’s journey, are familiar to the brain and offer a sense of comfort and satisfaction, which encourages viewer engagement. Storylines that build to a climax and resolve activate neural pathways related to anticipation and reward, offering closure and fulfillment that can increase the likelihood of viewers returning for more.
  5. Social Connection, identity and Fandom Loyalty: Game of Thrones encourages strong social identity within its fan base, with viewers identifying with specific houses or characters. This taps into the brain’s sense of community and belonging, which is strongly linked to loyalty. Being part of a fan community also releases oxytocin, reinforcing fans’ bonds with each other and with the show.

2-Perfect Acting

One of the crucial elements in drama or literally any TV/cinema production is acting. If one has a great story, remarkable post-production processing and editing but no real talented actors, you cannot have a successful project. However, if you have a cast such as Game of Thrones’, you have an Emmy-winning team! What makes these actors stand out? They are talented, skilled and versatile actors. Their particular strengths in my opinion are their dedication and skill-set. The secret to great acting in Game of Thrones:

  1. Powerhouse Performers: while GoT is a story about seizing power and winning the Iron Throne, it is only natural to identify a good number of powerhouse Performers in it. Some big influential powerhouse actor are: Emilia Clark (Daenerys Targaryen) who delivered an intense and commanding performance, displaying a strong presence and the ability to convey deep emotions throughout each step of her character’s life. Kit Harington’s (Jon Snow) powerful presence, particularly in battle scenes like the Battle of the Bastards, displayed physical intensity and emotional vulnerability (the way he acts with his eyes and voice with pure vulnerability!). His commitment to Jon Snow’s character arc made his journey feel authentic and resonant and he is one of my favorites for a reason. His name will be mentioned quite frequently in this post.
  2. Character Actors: are very present in Game of Thrones. Notably Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton), Rory McCann (Sandor “The Hound” Clegane), Conleth Hill (Varys), Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell), and Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister) among others. Character actors are known for deeply inhabiting the roles they play, often becoming unrecognizable by fully adopting the mannerisms, speech, and look of different characters. They’re highly regarded for their ability to bring a wide range of unique personalities to life.
  3. Method Actors: immerse themselves deeply in their character’s emotions and experiences to bring authenticity to the role. They are respected for their dedication to realism and often go to great lengths to prepare for roles. I’m gonna bring back Kit Harington (Jon Snow) who endured physical training and long hours in freezing conditions to authentically portray Jon Snow’s hardships. Not to mention keeping his iconic long hair for years, embodying Jon’s rugged look both on and off screen. Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton) should also be praised for this. He took an intense approach to the role of Ramsay, immersing himself in the psychology of a sadistic villain. His portrayal was so convincing that it was reported he maintained a strict professionalism to separate himself from the disturbing nature of Ramsay’s actions!

3-Excellent Aesthetics!

As humans, we love visually pleasing things. Faces, clothes, decoration, sets and landscapes, etc. Thus, it is no wonder to find a popular show like Game of Thrones having its own aesthetic. Its own visual identity and brand! This point is one of my favorites because, well…IT IS SO SATISFYING to watch the visual diversity and artistic world created by producers. It immerses our senses: sight, hearing (fantastic music!) in an utterly captivating fantasy world. Why it works?

  1. Authentic World-Building: blending together Detailed Set/Costume Design and Cultural/Regional Variation is a genius step. The set and costume design in Game of Thrones brought the medieval fantasy world to life with detailed, culturally distinct aesthetics. Each kingdom’s clothing, architecture, and decor matched its climate and values, making every setting feel rich, varied, and realistic.
  2. Epic Music: This is a huge factor when it comes to shows. Read more about it in this upcoming article.
  3. Cohesive Color Palette and Lighting: The show used earthy tones and natural lighting to evoke a grounded medieval feel, with firelight and sunlight often illuminating scenes. The dark, cold tones of the North contrasted with the warmer hues of King’s Landing, visually enhancing the unique moods of each region.
  4. Symbolic Use of Locations and Landscapes: Majestic, expansive landscapes created an epic scope, while specific locations, like the Wall, carried symbolic weight. These environments reflected the struggles, fears, and aspirations of the characters, adding emotional depth to the world.
  5. Realistic, Raw Visuals: Embracing grit and imperfection, the show’s aesthetic included dirt, grime, and raw realism in characters and settings, reinforcing the harsh and unforgiving nature of its world, while maintaining a palpable sense of authenticity.
  6. Blending Fantasy with Realism: The fantasy elements, like dragons and White Walkers, were used sparingly and integrated into the story with a restrained approach, making them feel powerful and believable while ensuring they didn’t overwhelm the more grounded, human conflicts.
  7. Character-Driven Visuals: Costumes, hairstyles, and symbols were carefully chosen to mirror characters’ journeys, with outfits evolving to reflect their inner changes. This part is one of my ultimate favorites as it reflects the deep attention to detail and the careful execution as well as dedication to the whole work. I love people who do their work with mastery and fastidiously. Daenerys, for example, transformed visually from vulnerable to powerful through her hair, as well as clothes colors and patterns, while symbols like house sigils hinted at larger themes and character fates.

4-Psychological Depth.

In my opinion, this is one of the strongest factors that draw viewers to intricate shows such as LOST, Breaking Bad, Mr.Robot, Dark, and Game of Thrones. The Unpredictability and Complexity in addition to the Thrill of Uncertainty activate the brain’s reward system, specifically the release of dopamine, which responds to unexpected events and keeps viewers eager for more. Additionally, morally ambiguous characters stimulate neural regions related to social cognition and decision-making, as we constantly evaluate their motives. This psychological engagement fosters a deep attachment, turning viewers into loyal fans who are intellectually and emotionally invested in the unfolding story. Here is how:

  1. Complex Characters and Moral Ambiguity: The show’s morally gray characters engage viewers’ empathy and keep them guessing. This triggers a heightened neural response in areas linked to social cognition and decision-making, as the brain is constantly evaluating characters’ motives and predicting outcomes. This complexity makes the show feel intellectually stimulating, encouraging loyalty and continued engagement. Also, we can relate to complex characters because in reality, we are all morally grey in certain ways. Finding a relatable character that speaks to your inner-self is a very meaningful bond to us.
  2. Plot Twists and the Dopamine Effect: Game of Thrones is known for shocking, unexpected plot twists. The brain’s dopamine system, which is involved in pleasure and reward, reacts to unpredictability and surprise (except for the problematic ending!). The frequent, high-stakes twists keep viewers’ dopamine levels engaged, creating a pleasurable tension and making them eager for more.
  3. Emotional Investment and Empathy: Game of Thrones builds deep emotional investment by placing characters in intense, high-stakes situations that test their vulnerabilities and strengths. As mentioned before, neuroscientifically, scenes that portray intense emotions and struggles activate the brain’s mirror neurons, allowing viewers to empathize and feel the characters’ experiences as if they were their own. This empathetic response creates a sense of connection and emotional resonance, making each victory, betrayal, or loss feel deeply personal to the audience. Over time, this bond reinforces loyalty and makes viewers more invested in the characters’ fates, rooting for them despite their flaws.
