Colin Bridgerton’s Character: Inspiration

After our Penelope Featherington inspired analysis, here comes Colin Bridgerton’s. Here are my favorite 6 takes on Colin Bridgerton Character this season that makes him my favorite lead in all seasons:

1-A Real Gentleman:

Let’s talk about how Colin Bridgerton has always been a real gentleman! I mean he never bad-mouthed women or talked down upon them. Since season 1 we can see how much of a gentleman he is with Marina. Besides with his family’s women and Penelope.

Although it is clear he was not in love with her, rather lustful, he went straight for marriage. Colin did not play games. Which Marina also said and took him as a potential target to save herself from getting publicly “ruined”. It emphasizes how she knew he was a gentleman who wouldn’t play with her. To her, he was the one to “save her”. Let’s also not forget how he honestly told her at the end of S1 when he discovered the pregnancy matter. That he would have married and accepted her, had she told him the truth from the beginning instead of taking him for a fool.

2-Colin is a sensitive male lead:

It is evident that Colin is the most sensitive of Dowager Lady Bridgerton’s sons, he is in tune with his loved ones’ emotions, wanting them to be happy, cracking a joke or two to ease out the tension, meaningful gifts giver, protecting Penelope and her family from their scamming cousin. He seems very much an empath and is unapologetic about it.

Not to forget how he writes in his journal about his travels and his sentiments. The desire to feel the intimacy, his romantic side, and the way he is not superficial in his perspective just goes to show how healthily sensitive he is. What I absolutely love is that he doesn’t dread his feelings. The moment he found himself in love, he accepted it and went for action.

3-Good hearted and non-toxic:

His good will shows through his actions with people around him, especially the whole situation with Marina. He isn’t the typical toxic heart-throb, not vain, isn’t arrogant or self-centered, not stubborn, and overall mentally healthy, despite some inner struggles, we all go through and which he was brave enough to acknowledge and improve. Unlike the past seasons’ male leads, he doesn’t suffer from a self-destructive tendency in love and doesn’t torture himself with silly stubbornness that stems from an egoistic place. He is clear, not shady and honest when it comes to others. Colin had a people-pleasing problem, and an insecurity in how men in his society perceive him. He felt ignored and ridiculed and feared that his sensitive nature threatened his acceptance into society as a man. In this season we see how he is healing and changing to break that pattern.

4-Seeking meaning, self-discovery, and development:

In season 3, we see how that lovely, not-so-seriously-taken boy is coming back from his travels as a man who learned to be confident abroad. Where nobody knew him or expected anything from him or to be someone else.

In his journey to find the man he aspires to be, he needed to flounder through his inner struggles between who he truly is and who society expects him to be as a man, or in other words, a rake. He needed to find that balance between being himself in a confident demeanor.

He was learning to combine authenticity with self-assuredness in a way that felt genuine and assertive. This male lead is inspirational for all men to embark on journeys to discover themselves, heal and develop. To become better for themselves and for others. Colin’s depth and meaning to find a life purpose is in my opinion the most inspirational and important thing one could do to live well.

5-The most romantic Bridgerton:

I was very surprised at some people who said that Colin isn’t as romantic as the other male leads. I mean the guy kept the letters he exchanged with Pen throughout the years, literally ran after her carriage. Figuratively and literally knelt in front of her in the carriage and poured his heart out wholeheartedly. Expressed his love more than any other male lead to her, his family members and to her mother. Stood up for her against her mother and made it clear everybody understands that he loves her. Arranged for their marital house the morning after they announced their engagement. Protected her and stood by her side even while being hurt and in disagreement with her upon the discovery of Whistledown’s truth. He even slept right in their chamber on the couch and refused to go to another room. What could this man do more?

Being romantic doesn’t have to mean shouting I-love-yous with anger and anguish. Expressing love in an agonizing way showing how much one hates how they feel, or having to make grande gestures. The purest form of romance could be the most subtle of them all. The most authentic, calm and meaningful. Colin proved to be the king of romance being vulnerable with his beloved, protecting, supporting, loving and showing her why. Teaching her how to love herself back and appreciating her through the mirror of his heart (pun intended, wink wink). I personally find him the most romantic male lead of all seasons so far. Here is a Colin Bridgerton Character Analysis from my favorite Sammy Bates.

6-A Really strong man:

In my opinion, the strongest of men is one who is not ashamed of his feelings. Of his genuine nature, and who goes for what he wants once he figures it. Colin is doing exactly this in season 3.

He was trying to be the rake everyone wants him to be (in the 1st 2-3 episodes) to look cool; yet, he never turned out to be a jerk. His inner truth was always there. The moment he figured out what he felt for Pen was love and that it isn’t wrong to go after her. Even if she is waiting for Lord Debling’s proposal; he gathered his courage and confessed his feelings. Colin put himself out there before her honestly and genuinely.

His speech in the carriage, despite not liked by some, was the most deepest thing a man in that condition could say. It was so intimate, vulnerable and fully honest. I also appreciate how he asked her in the carriage whether Debling proposed or not. Cause he didn’t want to ruin it for her if she already secured the proposal. He was gonna tell her only if she was not engaged respecting the morals of how it’s done.

His speech in the carriage, whether you consider it a confession or not, was deep, truthful, authentic and required lots of courage. Colin did not have to be screaming something or objectifying Pen. He was fully expressing his true feelings and psychological struggles and trying to figure them out in relation to her. Colin might have been dump at first, but he surely isn’t toxic, coward or a jerk.

Colin Bridgerton learned to be himself unapologetically regardless of the Ton’s men opinion of him. He also learned that he is loved for who he truly is and does not need to change to make Pen love him. He had insecurities about his deserving of love and we can see it on multiple occasions, but Penelope assured him and helped him to finally know that he is loved for his truth.

Do not be ashamed of who you are, speak yourself, and step into the light that suits you. You deserve love, respect and a happy life.

We all deserve to live our truths.

Love,
