So, I stumbled upon a reel on Instagram about the moment when Kit Harington and Emilia Clark first discovered their characters’ endings in Game Of Thrones in the script reading with the cast. Needless to say that I felt that Kit’s reaction was relatable when I found out about the ending. Many of my uni colleagues (who were BIG fans of Game of Thrones) were shocked and gave the craziest comments about the ending, as I am sure most of the fans did.
I was like, seriously, why did they ruin this production?
I watched most episodes, so I followed along with the basics of the story and I have to say that I liked how they wrote the character development of Daenerys Targaryen, until, the last episodes. I mean, how did this strong willed, just, kind-hearted strong female turned into this angry, murderous, with self- and anger-control problems?
Not gonna lie, throughout the series, I empathized with her, as well as with Sansa and wanted them both to become stronger and get the positions they deserve. Loved how Sansa turned, but Danny? Like, I was betting on her! I was hoping from the bottom of my heart to see at the end an embodiment of a leader who been through a lot and swore to fill their land with justice, freedom, stability and prosperity for the poor. What I saw — or read, instead (after hearing how it’s got a disastrous ending, I preferred to just read articles about the final events instead of watching) was the madness and sudden transformation and death of a character that symbolized a fair leader throughout the series! The Breaker of Chains, the hope of so many characters in the show to build a better world. She was the girl who been through the hardships with nothing of her own and managed to become the strongest leader in the whole show, in my opinion. One that we rooted for and hoped to see a better ruling regime to inspire us as people to go on in our lives, swearing to change for the better. However, we were met with a disappointing ending that left our hopes to see such symbolization turn into dust. I mean, she was the Queen the People Chose!
As I always say, series, films, songs, and overall audiovisual media productions heavily influence us. The way we emotionally engage with characters and events. The way we subconsciously reprogram our minds based on what media we consume is extremely crucial to know and monitor.
It would have been very inspirational and positive to finally see the “good” taking their rightful throne and witness the dark fate of the “bad” for their wrong-doings. However, to present us with a secondary character that was kind of, “calm” through it all seems…extremely weird, unexpected and unusual. I am trying to understand the message behind the end, the choice to make him the final leader.
I find that the end was too rushed, they made her a tyrant so fast burning innocent civilians for literally no valid reason. I find that the storytellers just…messed things up at the end. My issue isn’t with who wins the throne, it’s with the rushing of things (same happened with bridgerton S3), and transforming a character that symbolized the “good” throughout the seasons into a villain obsessed with power and worse: executing innocents (which she defended the whole time) in literally a couple of episodes. The normal development of a character in the end wasn’t very convincing and it showed a lack of gradual and valid transformation in the scenario. It is, in my opinion, a mistake in writing the development of things in the end. The non-acceptance of the end is only natural.
I admit that I highly preferred that the Bran takes over the throne instead of Cersei Lannister. I mean, he is wiser, obviously, has powers, calmer and most likely would rule well. I just cannot understand the emotional roller-coaster and turmoil the writers had to put the fans through. I was not a big fan, so I wasn’t THAT affected, but still, it did something weird to me. I was…confused. I need to know what fans think and how they analyze this.
I know there are layers to every character, every event and every message in the series.
I need to hear your thoughts about the ending. If you have an analysis, or analysis recommendation of someone already posted, don’t hesitate to share.
Love,
Nouha
